Downs chronicled the saga and significance of Wells’ discovery of nitrous oxide as an anesthetic. He also discussed how he mined the gaps in the historical record to imagine the life of Horace Wells for the novel.

This lecture was presented in recognition of the 175th anniversary of the discovery of anesthesia, by Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation and Bushnell Park Foundation presented the public lecture.
